What Does the 2023 NEC Say?

Under the 2023 NEC:

  • Receptacles on kitchen islands and peninsulas are no longer required

  • However, if installed, they must follow strict new placement and safety guidelines:

    • Installed on or above the countertop (within 20 inches)

    • Or built directly into the countertop using UL-listed countertop-rated products

These changes are designed to eliminate unsafe placements and ensure that power access is both functional and secure.

What This Means for Contractors in NJ, PA, NY & DE

We know code adoption varies by state. Here’s the current picture in our region:

  • New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware have not yet adopted the 2023 NEC statewide.

  • That means this update may not be enforced just yet, depending on your municipality.

  • However, code adoption is coming—and proactive contractors are preparing now by:

    • Installing UL-listed receptacles when power is requested at islands

    • Adding conduit or capped wiring as a low-cost future-proofing solution

By planning ahead, you reduce callbacks and set your clients up for success when local codes catch up.
