How do I know what size generator to choose for my home?
Contact Cooper Power Systems at 732-774-1058 and we can direct you towards a KOHLER Certified installer, who can analyze your electrical usage and determine the correct generator size for your needs.
Can I install the generator myself?
We do NOT recommend installing the Generator yourself. Please contact us at 732-774-1058, for more information on purchasing and installation.
Does my generator come with a battery?
Batteries are sold separately to ensure the freshest possible battery is installed at your home.
What size transfer switch do I need?
Contact us at Cooper Power Systems 732-774-1058 to schedule an onsite analysis to determine which generator and transfer switch off the best solution for your home.
What is the difference between a transfer switch that is rated for a service entrance and one that’s rate for a non-service entrance?
A service-entry-rated switch comes equipped with a main-line disconnect breaker built into the transfer switch. This is a nationwide code requirement when the transfer switch is wired directly into the incoming main power line for whole-house power. A non-service-entry-rated-switch requires the addition of a disconnect breaker at the jobsite. The service-entry-rated switch saves you time and money during the installation process.
How long can I let my generator run before I check my oil?
KOHLER recommends that you check your oil every 8 hours of operation, depending on the size and model of the generator. Check your operation manual included with your generator for a complete list of required maintenance procedures and schedules.
When is the best time to check my oil?
Check your oil level, prior to a storm. If the unit has been running for 8 hours or more, shut the unit down and let it sit for 2-3 minutes, check and add oil as needed.
How do I open the generator unit?
A large metal key is included in your owner’s packet. Insert the key and turn it 45 degrees to open the top of the hood or side-access door of the generator.
How do I manually power “off” my generator?
Open the generator hood or flip the circuit breaker to the “off” position (near the digital controller) This shuts off the power to the house (the load). It’s a good idea to run the generator with no load for 2-5 minutes. Then press the “off” button on the controller.
How do I check the oil in my generator?
Power off the generator and let the engine sit for two minutes to settle the oil Pull the dipstick from the back of the engine and wipe with a clean rag. Insert the dipstick back into the dipstick tube and pull it out. Note: The crosshatching on the end of the dipstick from “F”(Full) to “L” (Low), and see where the oil level falls. Add if the dipstick indicates that the oil level is low. Click the button below for a video tutorial on how to check the oil in a generator.
HOW TO CHECK GENERATOR OIL
Which oil should I use?
Your generator comes with the Kohler Genuine oil 5W-20 full-synthetic, which is the oil Kohler recommends. Although a synthetic blend may be used, our recommendation is to use full synthetic oil however, if you know that the oil has been changed out to conventional oil, then use only conventional from that point on. Do not mix synthetic oil with conventional oil.
Where can I get spare oil, filters, and batteries? How do I register my generator’s warranty protection?
Give our service department a call at Cooper Power Systems 732-774-1058 to schedule a complete post-installation Warranty Start-U at your home. Instead of your warranty beginning on the day your generator is purchased, it begins on the day your service technician submits your generator system’s details to the Warranty Start-Up program. The technician completes a checklist, makes sure the system is properly installed, and enters all necessary information on to the Kohler Warranty site. This moves the warranty start date to the day your generator is installed, instead of the date it left the factory.
